Got this cd right away, thinking that they were going to be really heavy on this. They got so much negative feedback since the Load/Re-load days for being so soft and selling out that this was definitely heavier but then even so this album is bad (literally). I blame mostly the production and the sound of Lars tin cans (I mean drums). On the title track they try to rip off Slayer but do it terribly. The songs and the album are both way too long. I suppose if the music were any good I wouldn't mind that. Their best work was clearly with Cliff Burton. They were intense, cohesive and driven. These days I think they lost their way after "The Black Album". One reviewer said they sounded a bit like System Of A Down or a bad nu-metal band and I agree with him. This doesn't sound like Metallica. It has raw production and it's a nice idea but that only really works for bands like Darkthrone or Mayhem. I'm sure they were thinking that if they made an album with raw production that their brutality would come out and it did, but the music was compromised as a result of it. I can't believe I'm going to say it, but I'd rather listen to Load and Re-load than this and I think most fans would agree. I recall hearing that the American troops tortured Iraqi soldier prisoners of war by also playing 24 hrs of Metallica. I can only imagine which album they were torturing them with? ::wink, wink::
