The best way (for me) to describe the direction Metallica is going is simple. At one time Led Zepplin was the heaviest thing around, at one time Ac/Dc was the heaviest thing around. In the 80's Metallica was the heaviest thing around, then came the 90's and just like the decrepit bands before them Metallica was just another thing aging hipsters listen to as to be "hip". The death metal and ever growing hardcore/grindcore scene has been above Country-tallica for over 10 years now and has written them off. Rightfully so too, because this is radio friendly material, stuff garage bands in the 70's used to play. James sounds like an old man going into a seizure when he attempts to sceam, the riffs are almost in slow motion and Lars forgot how to play the drums. Reno Kiilerich (PANZERCHRIST, VILE, HUMAN ERUPT) has 800 hits on the pedals in one minute, that is light years ahead of anything Lars could ever do, even if you go back in time 20 years. Metal has gotten so much heavier than anything Metallica could ever keep up with and this album is proof, they have better luck trying to keep up with the heaviness of country music than metal anymore. I do not like this band in anyway to say something like "RIP Metallica" because I hope it's not in peace. I want this band to continue to shame it's once mediocre name as they crash and burn.
