At first thought you would expect a heavy metal band and an orchestra to sound sub-par. But after listening to this CD it gives me a whole new thought. Some of the songs sound much better with the orchestra while others seem to be lacking; let me break it down:Ecstasy of Gold: An intro for the orchestra, I guess so they can tune up or something. Not a bad song but it's a smooth and well played song. Call of Ktulu: Another intro, this time for Metallica and why not start it with their best intrumental song? There are some parts in the song that sound weak but overall it's just as good as it was on Ride the Lightning, and the orchestra makes it an awesome background tune. Not to mention this song also leads straight into.... Master of Puppets: Probably forever gonna be Metallica's best song and work and in this album this song doesn't disappoint. I like the symphony in this song because it makes everything, but more importantly the solos sound more powerful. Of Wolf and Man: This song just seems to be a filler for the CD because I can think of many other songs that would have been great to hear, but after thinking about it they probably picked what they thought would sound good. Dont get me wrong, this song is great, but it sounds better without the orchestra. The Thing That Should Not Be: The orchestra in this song contributes very well here because it makes the song and lyrics sound better in theme. Only problem with this song is they "forget" the 2nd verse and yet they manage to keep the song the same length as it is on MOP. Weird, nice filling. Fuel: Don't see why people hate this song just because it's different. Anyway, this song sounds better with the orchestra whether you liked it in the first place or not. Overall, great, and the solo is a killer. The Memory Remains: I liked this song at first, but then came the background "na na na na" which sounded awful which is why I'm glad on this CD the orchestra gets into the foreground and the crowd starts singing which makes it sound so much better. This song sounds much better on this CD than Reload. No Leaf Clover: This is the better of the two new songs on this CD. Pretty much has the Load/Reload theme of music but overall a powerful sound and well played. Hero of the Day: This is where Metallica starts to get slow and steady. This song isn't one of my favorites but it does have a great sound and rhythm. THe orchestra contributes well in this sound and probably this may be one of the top songs they make sound better and more elaberate. Devil's Dance: I love the bass on this song but this is one of those songs where the orchestra makes the song sound weak at some points in the song than the original album. Bleeding Me: I can honestly say I was dissapointed in the way this song turned out. Bleeding Me is one of my top favorites, but this version is VERY weak, the drumming, the guitars, vocals, everything, it sounds horrible!! Do yourselves a favor and just skip to Disc Two after Devil's Dance. Nothing Else Matters: This was a great song to start out with because with the orchestra playing, this song sounds sooo much deeper. I just wish James wouldn't have would have kept the "Matters" part of the vocals long instead of cutting it short. That almost kills the song. Until It Sleeps: This is another song that sounds weak and probably one the weakest next to Bleeding Me. This song really isn't that great to begin with so it'll be a song to skip on the track. For Whom the Bell Tolls: One word: AWESOME!! This song sounds the best with the orchestra playing and since it's already a powerful song, you can only imagin. The only thing I can say is I wish they had the bell sounds in there and that they didn't cut the ending short. Minus Human: They're 2nd of the new songs adn even though this one sounds deeper, I still think Clover is better. Once again this song has the Load/Reload theme so if you are not a fan of those albums, you may not like this one. Overall it's a strong song from start to finish. Wherever I May Roam: Once again, another disappointment to a great song. There are some weak points, adn those would be the guitars and vocals, it sounds like James is trailing off at some points which can kill the song instantly. I prefer the Black Album version better. Outlaw Torn: My favorite song and this song is strong from start to finsih. My only dissapointment is that the background vocals are too deep. Great song with an even better solo. Sad But True: No disappointment here, the orchestra sounds superb in this song. Nice and heavy throughout and the solo sounds extra powerful. One: Well, with the weak sound of ...And Justice for All carried one into this song, the orchestra drowns the drums out almost completely which is a major flaw in this song. Although it still sounds good, the drums should have been stronger. Enter Sandman: Hmm, what was once an awesome intro song has turned into a great near ending song with just the sound of symphony. Everything sounds great in this song with the orchestra, the entrance, the middle and the break at the end (which gives the song an extra twist) Battery: You can't end an album better than this. This song is strong from start to finish and never disappoints. The song is also another area where the orchestra makes the solo sound so much more powerful.
