This album is no doubt quite an improvement and progression from the Kill em All lp. The sound is immensely cleaned up and the guitar solos are rampant and catchy. Contrary to popular opinion, I just dont think it plains out like a metal classic. Fight fire with fire is heavy but simple. Hetfields lyrics seem juvenile and his voice is kinda annoying as the song progresses. Ride the Lightning, the second track, starts with a very nice riff. An ok song, but goes on way too long. For Whom the bell tolls is a metal classic. one of the best songs on the album. Fade to black is also what is great about this cd. Trapped Under Ice is underated and enjoyable. Escape does nothing for me, a wierd uninspiring track. The call of ktulu is probably their worst instrumental. See Orion and To LIve is to Die for better instrumentals. Over all i see this album is a progression for metallica but far from perfect and overated to say the least. At the time it came out it was probably ground breaking, but we have already seen what came after it. Two amazing albums called Master of puppets and And justice For all. Still worth buying and a strong 4 stars from this metal fan.
