This is Metallica's second album and easily one of their best. The first track reminds me of the "Battery" intro because of the 30 sec+ acoustic guitar intro and it gets to be one of the fastest (if not the fastest) track on the cd. This is also the first Metallica studio album I bought and I still listen to it. I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but all the songs have to do with death in some way or another. I'll review the songs and you'll see what I mean.1. Fight Fire with Fire 5/5 like I said it starts off with an acoustic guitar then turns out to probably be the fastest song on the cd. great solo. It talks about the end of the world. 2. Ride the Lightning 5/5 the first time I heard it became my favorite because of the intro and the long solo, but then I heard Fade to Black. It talks about the electric chair. (obviosly) 3. For Whom the Bell Tolls 5/5 opens with bells (no s**t) and probably has the longest intro on the cd and one of the best to listen and play on guitar. no solo is the only downside. The bells are bells usually played at funerals. 4. Fade to Black 5/5 tied for best song on the album with Creeping Death and one of (if not) the best metal ballads of all time. starts with acoustic guitar, sweet solo, acoustic again, then the heavy "chorus". Talks about suicide. 5. Trapped Under Ice 4.5/5 I love the way it starts off with the fast solo by Kirk and a pretty fast song. cool solo after the first chorus. also the shortest song at 4:03 Talks about drowning. 6. Escape 4/5 probably the worst song on the album and a filler, but not a bad one to listen to. gets heavy at one point then breaks into an ok solo. This and Ktulu are the only ones I'm not sure what they're about about. 7. Creeping Death 5/5 tied with Fade to Black for best song. this song is so bad a$$ in concert and they always play it. very fast solo and verse riff and also fun to play on guitar. If you ever read the Bible you will see that this is about the 7 plagues of Egypt with Moses and "Creeping Death" is what killed the first born baby of almost every family. 8. The Call Of Ktulu 4.5/5 longest song at 8:53 and an instrumental. probably my 2nd favorite instrumental (with Orion being #1). got some weird bass in here and i still don't know what the hell the or a Ktulu is, so this and Escape are the 2 songs that i don't know what are about. So there's the song reviews. If you don't believe me on the subject matter listen to it for yourself. If you like Metallica or want to start liking them go buy this, I did and now i have every Metallica cd including S&M and Live Sh*t. Dave Mustaine co-wrote Ride the Lightning and The Call of Ktulu. And do you think it's a coincidence that the best songs on here Fade to Black and Crepping Death were written by all the members? cool huh.
