I have never understood why this album caused such a flap with Metallica's hardcore fans. Some day, go back and listen to each Metallica record from "Kill 'Em All" all the way through "...And Justice For All." This was a constantly-evolving band, and no two of their records sound alike at all.Okay, back to "Metallica." The first thing you notice is that it sounds incredibly good, thanks to Bob Rock's flawless production and nine painstaking months in the studio. Lars Ulrich and Jason Newsted actually sound like a rhythm section on this record instead of a backbeat for James Hetfield's pounding riffs. The songs have more of a traditional rock edge to them, but the guitar sound is as heavy as ever, if not more so. Highlights of this record include "The God That Failed," "Wherever I May Roam," "Nothing Else Matters," "Sad But True," and "The Unforgiven." I purposely omitted "Enter Sandman" because I got sick of hearing it on the radio. This isn't Metallica's best record, but it is damn good, and still heavy and rockin'. Don't be fooled by the narrow-minded rivetheads who want a band to sound the same on every record.
