I agree with the editorial review that says this album as a whole is Metallica's best album. The songs are more polished, the sound is more mature, everything is better. I believe Metallica reached its peak of perfection with this one. As far as the complex harmony structures of albums like Puppets, Justice..., or this "black" album, that is no weakness, it is one of Hetfield's best and defining qualities as a songwriter. What he tried to achieve and DID achieve in this area is really great, but then unfortunately he moved away from it. His old buddy Dave Mustaine and Megadeth tried to write more polished and melodically complex and technically mature songs back in those days too, and they succeeded at it as well. But I guess times change. I hate the brand new Metallica album. This old one is a million times better in just about every way.
