This is the album that made Metallica a household name. It also signaled a musical shift. Gone are the complex arrangements and progressive speed metal crunch that made Metallica masters of the genre. They are replaced by straight ahead (and somewhat boring) rock and roll. Casual fans should compare this album (many call it their favorite) to previous efforts (Master of Puppets in particular) to see how far Metallica had regressed. Upon repeated listens it sounds like a couple of radio friendly singles surrounded by filler. Still a good listen, just not great.
