I am a fan of old Metallica, even though I still like the newer stuff. No album made by any band in this genre compares to 'Puppets'. This album is a masterpiece from start to finish. This album followed the old metallica formula of starting off with a heavy song (Battery), having a 'Slower' song, (Sanitarium), having an instrumental (Orion) and ending with a blisteringly fast but incredible song (Damage,Inc.). The title track of this album I think is Metallica's best song and excuse enough to get this album. From start to finish, this album is nothing short of genius. Sadly, this is the last album with late bassist, Cliff Burton. As in previous Metallica albums, this album deals with some serious topics as only Metallica can. The power of Cliff Burton's bass, Lars Ulrich's drums, and the dueling Axe work of James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett make a powerful backdrop for James Hetfield's Raw but powerful vocals and the serious topics they convey. This album was produced by Flemming Rasmusen, who produced previous works. Rasmusen in my opinion, was the only one who captured Metallica's brilliance properly and put it on disk. Although Bob Rock makes powerful albums, I think Rasmusen is a much better fit with metallica. No written description will convince you that this is Metallica's best work more then just listening to it. One listen to this album and you will agree. Master of Puppets is in a class of it's own and will always be one of the best albums made.
