Quite simply the apotheosis of all that was Metal, Thrashing, and, indeed, Mad, MOP is one album that can quite rightly be called genre- defining. From the opening nylon strung strains of Battery, through the crushing title track to the final defiant belch of Damage Inc, this album destroys in a way few others before or since have managed. In many ways it actually destroyed the Thrash Metal movement itself:- what could the good intentioned likes of Metal Church, Testament and Sacred Reich do to top this behemoth? That's right- nothing. And Metallica's peers gave up the ghost too- Anthrax went comedy then grunge, Slayer invented Death Metal and then jumped on the punk bandwagon and Megadeth? They ended up supporting Metallica. There haven't been a great many truly classic albums released in the last twenty years- this is one of them.
