I am a relatively new bass player (i've been playing for one and a half years), and if I never listened to this album, I would not be where I am today. Cliff Burton tought me how to play metal. I am a 17 year old 130 lb weakling, but Cliff inspires me to build up my stamina and thrash like the mad man he was. For me not being a Metallica fan, it should mean something when I say this is my favorite Metal album. Battery is a perfect opener...similar to Fight Fire with Fire from Ride, but more varied and more interesting. Master is the classic track of course...awesome songwriting and structure. The Thing that Should Not Be is probably the least talked about Metallica song, which is pretty sad. I am not much of a huge fan of Kirk Hammet (his solos are too repetitive), but the solo in this song is simply amazing. Sanitarium shows off their songwriting skills like Master. Disposable Heroes: my favorite song on the album. Blisteringly fast, awesome riffs, lyrics, everything. The best part of the song is the triple-harmony ending. So beautiful. Lepper Messiahalso has amazing lyrics, and becomes a very fun song near the end when it picks up speed. Orion is beautiful. Many guitar solos, a little bass solo, and an awesome bassy classical riff. Damage, Inc. is the best closing song ever. It brings light to an otherwise dark album, and ends it with confidence. If you are a bass player, I highly recommend Master. The presence of the bass on the album is so incredible. Also, this album is very progressive without being cheesy. Sure, ...And Justice for All has its title track of 9:44, and only two songs under the 6 minute mark, but the songs are much more repetetive...plus, there is virtually no bass on that album. Master of Puppets is their masterpiece, and is what keeps me listening to an otherwise unrespectable group of guys
