Master of Puppets, upon its release in 1987, was heralded as one of the Greatest Metal albums of all time, and possibly THE Best. Although not very popular commercially at the time, after the release of The Black Album, many people began to peruse Metallica's older stuff, and many people began to spread that Master of Puppets was the greatest metal album of all-time. Granted, Master of Puppets is a GREAT album, but I think Ride The Lightning and ...And Justice For All are simply better because the songs are so much more complex and less repetitive. Master of Puppets still stands as one of Metallica's best, and sadly was their last album with bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a tragic car accident(At least he died respectfully and not of an overdose!), and he will always be remembered for his great work from Kill 'Em All through Master of Puppets. Below you will find a song by song review, although there are no bad songs!

Battery:10/10- Simply a thrash classic, one of the fastest songs you will ever hear chockfull of masterful solos by Hammett! Lyrics are slightly lacking, but that can be forgiven!

Master of Puppets:10/10- An undeniable classic, this contains one of Hammett's most memorable riffs and probably Lars' best drumming ever! Hatfield's vocals truly shine! Around 3:30 in, the song adds a solo from Hammett that is truly brilliant!

The Thing That Should Not Be:9/10- Gets one point lower because Lars is on vocals(Simply not as good as Hatfield) and gets a little repetitive. Insanely good lyrics and an absolutely insane solo from Hammett!

Sanitarium:10/10- One of Metallica's most loved songs, it starts off slow, and then picks up to become one of the hardest songs on Master of Puppets. Hammett is truly at his peak here, as this song contains about 3 epic solos! Great chorus, it's too bad Lars sings most of the song!

Disposable Heroes:10/10- If you thought that Lars Ulrich or Cliff Burton are overrated, just listen to the beginning of this song! Classic Thrash from Metallica, fast with no holds bared. Great chorus, one of the most memorable on Master of Puppets! Gets a bit repetitive, but Hammett's solo all but makes up for it!

Leper Messiah-10/10- One of my favorite Metallica songs, all the instruments are played masterfully! Really great lyrics and vocals from Hatfield respectfully! Really great solo from Hammett about 4 minutes in!

Orion(Instrumental)-10/10:Probably the reason they played this song at Cliff Burton's Funeral is mainly because of how it single-handedly shows that Burton was one of the best bassists of our time. This is probably my favorite song on this album, because we get 8 beautiful minutes of unadulterated Hammett solos!Very epic in its scale, it goes from very dark and heavy to light and airy, and I just love that!

Damage, INC.-10/10: Along with Battery, Damage, INC is the fastest song on Master of Puppets, and Hatfield does an admirable job of keeping up with the pace. Really great solo from Hammett, but when is there not!

Overall, every song is great, and this album is perfect, yet it isn't quite as good as ...And Justice For All or Ride The Lightning, which are just PHENOMENOMALLY GOOD! Personally, my favorite song is Orion, but Battery, Master of Puppets, and Sanitarium aren't close behind! Hammett truly shines in this album, but he reaches his creative peak with ...And Justice For All. Without a doubt, Master of Puppets has the best lyrics for any Metallica album, and it shows just how genuis Hatfield is at making up lyrics.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! IF YOU'RE A FAN OF METAL YOU SHOULD ALREADY HAVE THIS(Shame on you if you don't!) AND IF YOU'RE A FAN OF ROCK IN GENERAL I SEE NO WAY YOU WOULD NOT LIKE THIS! ALSO GET: KILL 'EM ALL, RIDE THE LIGHTNING, ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, AND THE BLACK ALBUM. ~~~~~Thanks for Reading!
