Great Metal, But Not Thrash (Rated this album with 8 out of 10) Reviewed by

Garage, Inc. is a great Metallica album. All of the songs on disc 1 sound like the good songs from Load and Reload (King Nothing, Until It Sleeps, Fuel, The Memory Remains, and The Unforgiven II). However, this album will disappoint a lot of fans who like to think of Metallica as a mere thrash band. For those of us who know that Metallica outgrew speed metal years ago, however (though they've definitely been in a creative slump for a while), Garage, Inc. will stand as a great band paying tribute to its heroes. The album's best tracks are "Sabba Cadabra" (Metallica putting a great spin on a little-known Black Sabbath classic); "Turn the Page" (which fits Metallica much better than a Bob Seger song should); "Die, Die My Darling" (the only good punk song is one written by Glenn Danzig, and played by a heavy metal band); "Loverman" (a downright scary tune); "Whiskey in the Jar" (probably the best-known song off the album); and the best of the best, their take on Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy."
