I have trouble really putting my finger on what makes this album so great. It seems, besides the superb performances and top notch production, that there is an aura in this recording that lends an almost supernatural feeling to it. Rob's vocals in particular are just staggering, and when he screams "VICTIM OF CHAAAANNNNGGGGEEESSSSSS!" right before Glenn's solo you know that this is no ordinary human being at the microphone. This is the METAL GOD, and this performance alone cemented his reputation for all time. It sends shivers up my spine every time. In addition to the superhuman vocals, it seems that there is something really different about the guitar tone here that adds an intensity to the proceedings. It is pure energy, like nothing we've heard from them before or since, and I think it is a major part of that mysterious quality which makes this recording as incredible as it is. I don't care if, in actuality, it is "Unleashed in the Studio". The final product here is definitely a highlight in heavy metal history, because it takes you to a place filled with tumultuous, energized. unrelenting METAL the likes of which we probably won't hear again.
