Turbo

(Average Rating: 5.88 out of 10)

Okay, but way too commercial

Turbo was Judas Priest's attempt at crossing over into the mainstream by writing songs with a pop edge and a dominance of guitar synthesizers. While many of the songs are decent, the album turned off their hard-core fans, didn't attract many new fans, and effectively ended the momentum they had attained with strong albums like British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance.

Despite the album sounding very commercial, there are a few good tracks here such as "Reckless", "Rock You All Around The World", "Hot For Love", and "Locked In". Tracks such as "Turbo Lover" and "Out In The Cold" would have been much stronger if the guitar syths weren't so overpowering. Other tracks such as "Parental Guidance" have not aged well and sound pretty silly today. Another disappointment of the album is the darker lyrics and more complicated song structures that comprised their previous albums are noticeably absent. The band would go back to their roots on Ram It Down but the damage was already done. If you like the overproduced late '80s hair band albums, you may enjoy Turbo. But this is definitely not one of their best.
