The Best Of Judas Priest: Living After Midnight

(Average Rating: 7.34 out of 10)

Great band, but this compilation is a mediocre one

After releasing their final album with vocalist Rob Halford, Judas Priest decided it would be the best time to release a greatest hits album. They released it, but it came with extremely mixed results. Read on for track-by-track comments:

1. The Green Manalishi: Good song, no complaints

2. Living After Midnight: This is the best of the band's three radio hits, so I won't complain.

3. Breaking The Law (Live): Two complaints here. First of all it's a live version. Live music should never be on a Greatest Hits album unless the live version is a bigger hit than the studio version, the live version is substantially better than the studio version, there is no studio version, or if you're trying to cover every release by the band.

4. Hot Rockin': Not a great track, but not a must-skip either. This space could have been filled with a better track,

5. Heading Out To The Highway ( Live): Read what I wrote above for Breaking The Law.

6/7. The Hellion/Electric Eye: This is one of the best Judas Priest songs ever so I'm not complaining. However, because The Hellion is so short and fades into Electric Eye, the two tracks should be just one.

8. You've Got Another Thing Comin': The band's biggest hit isn't exactly a great song. This space could have been filled with a much better track.

9. Turbo Lover: GREAT SONG. However, many people dislike the Turbo album, so having a song from it on the Greatest Hits album is a bit odd.

10. Freewheel Burning: Read what I wrote for Hot Rockin'.

11. Some Heads Are Gonna Roll: Good song, no complaints

12. Metal Meltdown: Read what I wrote for Hot Rockin'.

13. Ram It Down: Good song, no complaints

14-16: Read what I wrote for the live version of Breaking The Law.

This is a good compilation overall. However the omissions of Rapid Fire, Metal Gods, The Ripper, Before The Dawn, Exciter, Sinner, United, Troubleshooter, Chains, Bloodstone, Rock Hard Ride Free, Wild Nights Hot And Crazy Days, and the awesome title track from Painkiller are hard to ignore. If you are just the casual fan, this compilation is for you. If you're a step up from the casual fan but still not willing to shell out tons of cash for every album, get the 2CD Metal Works compilation. If you're a die-hard and money is no object go ahead and buy every album from the Halford era. Casual fans, stay away from the "Ripper" Owens albums.
