It's amazing how some records can slip by you the first time around. Then you throw it on one day, kind of out of the blue and re-realize why you bought the friggin' thing in the first place. the first of several Priest classics in a row, "Sad Wings Of Destiny" is an eerie record of gloomy guts and class. Shades of what is to become in this genre. Goes toe to toe with Black Sabbath.Rob Halford's vocals are breathtaking. The vocal range this man has on this recording is simply, for the lack of a better description-- awe inspiring. Full of emotion, pouring it out on every track, its pretty easy to see why he's considered one of the all-time metal vocal greats. It's almost like "Being Robert Halford" for those hair-raising 15 minutes. And then the music itself. Invoking all things made of doom and gloom, backing up a gifted singer with hallowed forboding notes. Two grey beyond grey sullen dirges of depression and the rest being critical, important rockers, this album just might send chills up your spine. It should anyway. From the creepy, thundering slasher cut "The Ripper" to the utterly incredible "Island Of Domination", every track on here is gorgeous. A must have in any collection, and without a doubt, an absolute crime if it is missing from your Judas Priest collection.
