When Rob Halford's killer solo album Resurrection came out last year, he proved once and for all that he was the real driving force behind the legendary band known as Judas Priest. With this new release, Glenn Tipton and his pal Ripper tried to best Halford's triumph, but they failed miserably. Although I take great offense at the comments of the reviewer who dared compare him to the great Ronnie Dio, there is no question that Ripper can sing. The problem is that he can't write lyrics, and nobody else in this incarnation of Priest can either. The lyrics are silly and downright stupid. Your average seventh-grader can write better song lyrics than Ripper. That said, while I do agree that Ripper is talented, he's also quite green in this stage of his career. He has the power, but not the range. As he gets more experience performing, I have no doubt that he will improve and become a major force in modern metal. After all, even Halford didn't get his incredible voice overnight. What Ripper needs to do is leave Priest and join a band that already has a good lyricist - and composer, for that matter. The music on this album was composed entirely by guitarist Tipton, and is very uninspiring. Except for a few bright spots, his riffs and solos are generally lackluster. Tipton's been playing metal for 25+ years, but on this album, it seems that he has very little to say about the music. Nothing new here. Rob Halford was the true creative force behind this band, and it will never be the same without him. Ripper's got a long way to go before he even comes close to Halford. Unfortunately, he's going nowhere in the new Judas Priest. Glenn Tipton is a good guitarist, but he's no Tony Iommi - he'll never be able to carry this band on his back without the star vocalist. It's time to give this Priest the last rites.
