Defenders Of The Faith

And even remastered, it still sounds like the death knell

I will always maintain that THIS is the Priest record where campy theatrics finally overtook solid metal music. It disappoints throughout. I simply cannot hear Eat Me Alive or Love Bites and keep a straight face. The music here is too commercial, too non-descript given Priest's excellent history, and simply not up to par with their legend. Remember people, the seeds of Turbo started here, don't forget that. Though there is one track that maintains some glory, The Sentinel. And why they chose Freewheel Burning, Night Comes Down, and the AWFUL Eat Me Alive to be on the box set Metal Works instead of The Sentinel still puzzles me.

And while we're ranting, let me express my disappointment in the remastering. A little more bass and a little more volume does NOT constitute a "remaster." And whatever genius decided that the cover should be nothing more than the old cover with a dull silver/gray border should be killed for ignoring a golden opportunity to really make the remastered CDs stand out. And what's with the liner notes? "We liked making this record. We thought these songs were good. Yeah." Gosh, don't expend any excess energy in making these remasters significantly better than the old versions, guys. Total underachieving on display here.

So there you have it. The first "bad" Priest CD in all of its emptily "remastered" glory. No, thanks.
