I started out as a wee laddie with glam metal, Poison and Ratt with the occasional healthy dash of the Scorpions were my standards. I used to always turn the channel in disgust when "Flight of Icarus" came on Headbanger's Ball. Who were these ugly louts, what with their drunken antics? And where were the sleazy lyrics about banging chicks and the ultra-permed hair? They kind of frightened me. But stay the hell away from my shameful past and Dokken vinyl and let the Irons give you the lesson in what the true spirit of heavy metal is. _Somewhere In Time_ gave me the slap in the face that I needed - cause in the 80s, if you played guitar, you simply had to try to play the beginning to "Wasted Years". (Its required, I think, kinda like wandering into a guitar shop and hearing some newbie trying "Stairway to Heaven" or "One"). But those of the uninitiated, this should be your starting point. The songwriting on this album is amazing, you have the traditional Maiden epic glory metal with "Where Eagles Dare" and "Flight of Icarus" and ESPECIALLY the Maiden standard "The Trooper" with its classic Steve Harris galloping bass line, but then you get the additional prog-metal perks of "Revelations", and the almost pop-like hook-heavy "Sun and Steel" with some fantastic vocal harmonies by Bruce. Oh yeah, and an evil-sounding backwards message in front of "Quest For Fire" to boot! But the swirling, hypnotic "To Tame a Land" is my personal favorite, I have no idea why, because I always smirk when I hear Bruce trying to sing about the Kwizatz Haderach and how he has to get the Gom Jabbar. Call it a silly sentimental favorite. Balls out and devoid of filler, one of the best metal albums the Irons made, and one of the best EVER made. Period.
