Iron Maiden's Reviews

No Prayer For The Dying

(Average Rating: 6.20 out of 10)

Maiden enter the Nineties - with a masterpiece!

(Rated this album with 10 out of 10)
Reviewed by Leaf from I just got back from METAL 2000 and I got no Idea where I am

This is definitely the Album I would recommend to someone who is not familiar with Maiden's Music. Forget Seventh Son which saw Maiden go downhill to a mix of synth-guitars and sometimes boring long songs. This is more Maiden than anything they released after "live after death", it marks a comeback to a more raw and simple style and is closer to early efforts like "Killers" or "Number of the Beast". Bruce doesn't try to reach new peaks in high singing and this is definitely more sympathic and enjoyable than his attempts to a real "siren". Here is my tracklist :

1. Tailgunner - a great opener, the guitar playing in the beginning is amazing! Heavy and fast - this is Maiden on Top of Things!

2.Holy Smoke - The most criticized song on the whole Album, but only by people who mix up Maiden with Dream Theater! Simple but effective, it could have been on "Number of the Beast"!

3.No prayer for the dying - Half-a-ballad with a great Melody. Somehow reminds me of "Afraid to shoot Strangers" on the later, even better, "Fear of the Dark".

4.Puplic Enema No. One - Antother good song with a lot of mighty guitars and a catchy refrain.

5.Fates Warning - creepy and cool. My favorite Song on the whole Album, Bruce is at his cruelest ( positively! )

6.The Assasain - weakest Song on the album, still not bad but quite too "familiar".

7.Running silent, running deep - Bruce and the rest on top of Things, the song has a great atmosphere.

8.Hooks in you - same as for holy smoke, catchy and heavy without being boring

9.Bring your daughter to the Slaughter - another highlight, the most known song of this album. It made me freak out when they played it live!

10.Mother Russia - not that good, more in the vain of "Seventh Son"-Style. But a good ending for a great album!

Sadly, this album hasn't gained the reputation it deserves. At the Time it was released, Nirvana and other Bands were quite more in. But this Album is timeless, don't belive the bad reviews! Maiden were preparing for their Best Album ever "Fear of the Dark".
