A Classic Debut

This album is where it all started for Maiden. It proves that they were on of the best bands of the NWOBHM. This album features original singer Paul Di'Anno, original drummer Clive Burr who was replaced by Nicko McBrain, guitarist Dennis Stratton who was replaced by Adrian Smith, and the only two original members, bass player Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray.

The album opens with Prowler. This is easily one of the bast songs recorded during this era. The song has a great guitar sound and it also features powerful vocals from Paul Di'Anno. Remember Tomorrow begins mellow and melodic but it does kick in to some degree. It is more melodic than heavy. Running Free is a heavy song that begins with upbeat drums courtesy of Clive Burr. It is a great song. Phantom of the Opera is also one of the best Maiden songs from this era. It is the longest song on the album but believe me it's not at all boring. The music is simply amazing. This song shows what an amazing band they really were. There is amazing vocal harmonies, guitar solos, and Steve Harris' bass playing is insane. Transylvania, Sanctuary, and Charlotte the Harlot are heavy fast paced songs that feature first class musicianship and powerful vocals. Strange World is a very mellow song, the whole way through. The last song is the classic, Iron Maiden. This song is performed live to this day. It is truly an amazing song. One of the best parts about this album is that you really hear the band's origins as a bar band. This album is nowhere near the Bruce Dickinson era but it's still worth 5 stars. So you get the idea of how good the Dickinson albums are. I reccomend this album to anyone intrested in the NWOBHM or anyone who is just into metal. I don't suggest this for first time listeners though. If you are getting into Maiden definately get Powerslave, Piece of Mind, The Number of the Beast, 7th Son of a 7th Son, Somewhere in Time, and Brave New World. I also strongly suggest Bruce Dickinson's last 2 solo albums, Accident of Birth and the Chemical Wedding because they are both amazing.
