In Flames is a great band. That has to be said right off the bat. They dabble in musical genres most other bands wouldn't dream of treading in today, and they have worked hard to creat their own unique sound and gain respect on their own terms. Whoracle is a great album. This also must be said, because it presents with some of In Flame's greatest songs and melodies. "Jotun", "Gyroscope", "Dialogue With the Stars", and most of the others, are simply fantastic. All in all, a great In Flames effort.Unfortunately, something else must be said: In Flames is really, REALLY losing their edge. All the great sounds and styles they pioneered back a few years ago is now taking a backeat in their later albums, being replaced by far inferior riffs, less techincal melodies, and music that is becoming basically... too simple. It's really disappointing. We all know they have talent, but each new In Flames album nowadays is another big step backwards musically. That's why I'm pretty much writing this review: to inform those who might mistakenly buy In Flames newer work and haven't yet experienced the beauty of Jester Race or Whoracle, one of In Flames last good albums. If you're one of the people who dig In Flames newer sound and don't mind the music being so damn simple and nu-metalish, then don't bother listening to what I'm saying, stop reading here. But if you're someone who enjoys the likes of more melodical and technical bands like Iron Maiden and Dream Theater (two of my favorite bands, coincidentally) then I insist you look towards In Flames earlier releases, including their soon-to-be-rereleased debut album, Lunar Strain. Don't bother with their newer music, like Clayman, it's not really going anywhere. I saw these guys live a few weeks ago, and I could tell just by looking at the people next to me that no one is enjoying the direction that this band is now going. They decided to play something from their new album, which they said will be coming out soon, (they didn't say it's name) and I'm sorry guys, it's not looking too good. It's better to just remember In Flames as how they once were: a unique and creative band willing to do something different.
