In Flames's Reviews

Whoracle

A Slightly Changed Opinion

I've decided to re-review this album, mostly because of two notable things: I've had a bit of a change of heart, and believe that I was looking at In Flames' later efforts a bit too judgementally. I've given their albums a bit more time and devotion (something which I think I owe to any artist, especially In Flames) and I've realized that, at the time, I was just expecting to hear The Jester Race again, something I now realize I don't really want. After all, what future does a band have if it refuses to grow and expand it's sound?

In my previous review, I stated In Flames later material as sounding too nu-metalish, a term (considered in my vocabulary something of an expletive) I believe does not do the band justice at all. I didn't look at the big picture and see the sheer scope of sound this band was covering; the stellar guitar harmonies driving this album, AND in later albums, are simply awesome, but just, in comparison to Jester Race... a bit different. And I didn't see that.

My second reason for re-reviewing this album: I don't really think in my last synopsis of this record I really indicated just how much I enjoy this cd and this band. After a few once overs on this review a few days ago, I realized that my praise for this album started to go floating off into another direction and I ended up criticizing other In Flames records, which was not my intention, and not entirely appropriate for a review of Whoracle.

So I hope my point came across here and that everyone who reads my previous review of Whoracle realizes that mistakes were made, and my final verdict on this album is that it is an excellent cd, one well worth your money and the time you plan to spend digesting its thick, yet beautifully disorted guitars and intricate and well-planned melodies. Overall, still not as excellent as Jester Race as a whole, but just as deserving of the In Flames name as any album preceeding it.

Best songs: Jotun (one of In Flames' best album openers) Gyroscope, Dialogue With the Stars (to date, still my favorite In Flames instrumental) Jester Script Transfigured, Worlds Within the Margin.
