Arguably the most significant band to emerge from the Gothenburg death metal scene, In Flames were at the top of their game when they released WHORACLE. It's probably the peak of their career, and I would even go so far to say that it's the best thing that they've ever written (impressive, when you consider that they previously released the brilliant JESTER RACE).

Many people often describe it as being "melodic death metal with Iron Maiden-style guitars," and they're not too far off. Unlike most death metal albums, though, the songs often reek of the word "epic," and the soaring guitar harmonies are very addicting. Anders Friden gives an amazing vocal performance, screaming over the thrashing instruments to very great effect.

In an album like this, all the songs are memoralble, so it's hard to pick favorites. The opener, "Jotun," has one of the greatest guitar riffs I've ever heard in my entire life... I remember the first time I heard it and I couldn't get the melody out of my head for week! "Food for the Gods" is another standout track, as is the very impressive "Gyroscope." I've had people tell me that "The Hive" is their favorite In Flames song, and it's not hard to hear why, and "Episode 666" just might be the heaviest song on the album.

If you're at all interested in this fantastic band, this album is the PERFECT place to start... It's got everything that the band is known for, and it has great replay value (I've had this disc for a while now, and I've listened to it three times today!). This is essential...
