In Flames's Reviews

Whoracle

(Average Rating: 8.98 out of 10)

In Flames' greatest hour.

From the killer opening riff of "Jotun" to the final hums of the largely-instrumental "Whoracle", In Flames' 1997 release of the same name showed the incredible band at their peak - and one from which they have since slipped, treading into, well, "different" territory on subsequent albums - especially 'Reroute To Remain'.

One of the true innovators of the "Gothenburg" death metal scene, along with Dark Tranquillity, 'Whoracle' is a testament to what a fine album these Swedes were able to put out, although sadly something that they never managed to improve upon.

I somehow found 'Whoracle' when I was rummaging around a web site - but these were back in the days of me being a fan of a few bands whose names shall not be mentioned, for the sake of dignity - and as such, it was a rather large musical leap for me, being my first death metal of any sort; the first few listens were quite alienating to me, but as it grew on me, it became one of my favourite listens at the time, and along with Gamma Ray's Power Plant, played a pivotal part in what has been my shift of tastes from largely alternative ("nu") metal to the rest of the metal world.

If you are a fan of any sort of metal, you should do anything to get your hands on this album - this album is THE melodic death metal album to own, above all others.
