long live melodic death!

In Flames were my introduction to melodic death metal. Regular death metal is good, not great, at least when done right. Suffocation, Pyaemia, Nile, and other bands are interesting, although the sound comes close to cacophony, which makes it hard to listen to. Death are more thrashy, which is good, although their lyrics suck. Lately, we have seen bands like Kittie makes some awesome experimentations, like on their album, "Oracle". However, death metal cannot outshine melodic death, and this album proves it.

Take the two best tracks: Dead Eternity, and Goliaths Disarm Their Davids. They exemplify the best in melodic death by way of powerful riffs, vocals ranging from passionate shouts to subtle chanting, atmospheric keyboarding, and a real break from the verse-chorus-verse syndrome, which, despite notoriety, is found a lot in regular death metal. This labum will leave you in tears of wonder, with most of the tracks coming close to the majesty of the countless sounds mixed together into one flowing billow of power. The only problem is the last track. It is poorly recorded and boring; if you want to hear it done right, get the album Lunar Strain/Subterranean.

A beautiful album, all-in-all. If you're a neophyte to the "metal underground", I strongly suggest you begin with this album. In Flames rock!
