This is the only In Flames album I have, but I listen to it all the time. This is one of the best metal cds of the 90s! All 10 tracks are incredible. The 4-song Black Ash Inheritance EP is pretty good, more like bonus tracks than anything else.Of the 10 songs on the album, the strongest is "Moonshield," with one of the most infectious melodies you'll ever hear in a death metal song. All 10 songs are very strong, but other highlights include "Artifacts of the Black Rain," "Dead Eternity," and the title track "The Jester Race." Also, the instrumental "Jester's Dance" is pretty awesome. In Flames is very intense, and very heavy. These are carefully crafted metal songs that will blow you away! "Wayfaerer" kind of sounds like Def Leppard, you'll see what I mean. Not in a bad way. The closer, "Dead God in Me" is epic-sounding and one of the angriest, most intense moments on the album. Overall, this is an excellent metal album by a very creative band. The "Black Ash Inheritance" EP plays kind of like 4 bonus tracks, but they are definitely worthy of many listens. The first song, "Goliaths Disarm Their Davids," sounds kind of like a re-working of "Artifacts..." from the long album, but it still rocks hard. "Gyroscope" is an awesomely great song, as good as the best of Jester Race, although it also appears on the album Whoracle, released later the same year. I don't have Whoracle, but I will assume that the album version is either the exact same thing, or even better (can this be possible?). The "Acoustic Medley" is nothing special, it is just that; a medley of acoustic riffs, some (all?) of them from other In Flames songs. The final track, "Behind Space," is a killer live performance of a song from In Flames' first album Lunar Strain. I don't have this album either, but this is a really awesome song, and the performance is incredible. The band obviously has amazing technical ability, and the performance seems inspired. Overall, this is a great disc. As a newcomer to In Flames, it certainly provided an insight into their music. I think it is great that the EP is packaged with the album, because otherwise I probably wouldn't ever hear it, considering its obscurity. If you are into melodic metal, and you are not into In Flames, I strongly suggest you get with the picture!
