I finally bit the bullet and bought this as my first In Flames album after hearing someone put In Flames in their "holy trinity of metal". I didn't expect anything before listening, in fact I remember listing to a couple mp3's and not liking it (at the time I was listening to Andromeda which is more like progressive metal such as Dream Theater).

After 4 listens or so I am really digging it. Traditionally I have been able to listen to some death metal, I even own a couple discs (Obituary, Carcass). A friend of mine tried to get me into Opeth but I couldn't take the vocals very well. For some reason the vocals on In Flames don't bug me, maybe it's because the rest of the music is so good. Not sure, anyway they are heavy, have twin lead harmonies, and good hooks in their songs. In total this equals AWESOME MUSIC! If you like melodic metal like Iron Maiden and you also like heavier stuff sometimes then In Flames is your band (especially if you can put up with some deathy vocals).

As for the lead guitar work, it's ok. Much better than guys who don't know what they're doing (most death metal leads) but they aren't exactly Yngwie Malmsteen level lead players (or even Dave Murray level).
