To be honest I was very nervous about this album. Iced Earth is probably my favorite band and to me Matt Barlow was THEIR voice. When I heard he left the band I was (for the lack of a better word) shocked. How could IE possibly recover from this setback? Who could possibly fill Matt's gigantic shoes?

Jon Schaffer chose non other then Tim Owens from Judas Priest for this task. Now I knew Tim could handle the high screams that IE demands but could he pull off the emotion that Barlow could? While not exactly on that level Tim does one hell of a job on his first (and hopefully not last) IE album. He can hit the high notes and is very convincing when he gets into the emotional stuff (even though he does sound like another metal god...Bruce Dickinson during these parts. check out the verses to "when the eagle cries" if you don't believe me).

Now on to the music. Mr. Schaffer has once again outdone himself. IE is possibly the only band I know of that ALWAYS gets better from album to album and the glorious burden is no exception. It may take a few spins for it to really sink in but this is the best IE album to date. There are the insanely brutal songs (greenface, the reckoning, red baron) and the awesome ballads (hollowman and ESPECIALLY when the eagle cries). IE is also know for having epics on the end of their album and this one has the mother of them all! The gettysburg trilogy has to be heard to be believed. It makes you feel the glory, anguish and horror of being in that famous battle.

This albums lyrics are all based on real life events and I hope that IE sticks to this from now on. Don't get me wrong, dark fantasy songs are cool but songs about real life horrors are just more captivating.

Do yourself a favor and get this album. If you are any kind of metal fan you will regret not having this in your collection.
