The Glorious Burden

(Average Rating: 8.86 out of 10)

A Truely Awsome Album

I had never listened to Iced Earth until this album, and wow! what a famtastic album "The Glorious Burden" is.
I can't fault anything with it, it has everything: great lyrics (I'm a history buff too), great guitar riffs (and solos), I love the double kick drum, great production, terrific artwork & packaging (with song explanations by John Schaffer), and Tim Owens's great voice.
I have read reviews from some Iced Earth fans who don't like his voice and I can understand why. As a long time Judas Priest fan I was not that keen on him when he replaced Rob Halford. But I did warm to him after a while and in the end I came to fully appreciate his talent, and now I reckon his voice is awsome. I haven't heard any other Iced Earth so I can't compare with the past, but I reckon Owens vocal style is suited to the type of music Iced Earth play (on this album at least anyway).

Although all the songs are good my favorite songs on this album are:
Declaration Day, Attila, Hollow Man, Valley Forge, and all three parts of Gettysburg (it is worth buying the album for this 30 minute plus epic alone!) I also like the bonus unplugged version of When The Eagle Cries, and the Star Spangled Banner intro.

The other songs are not filler, I just don't like them as much. Probably the ones I like least are the bonus song Greenface (but I like it more each time I play it), and Red Baron/Blue Max (but some reviewers like this song the best, so there you go!)

This is an album which is not for casual listening. It is complex and intense, and I reckon you have to sit down and do nothing else except read the packaging along with it to get the ultimate feel and experience of the album.

"The Glorious Burden" is an awsome album and I have found it very exciting and satisfying. I thoroughly recommend it to any fan of real metal, especially if you like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and what Metallica used to play.

Now I'll have to check out the Iced Earth back catalogue!
