Iced Earth: Iron Maiden meets Metallica

(Rated this album with 6 out of 10)

Iced Earth has long combined the speed and thrash of Metallica and the metal thunder of Iron Maiden. With The Dark Saga, Iced Earth has progressed and defined themselves not as a Metallica/Maiden clone (which they never really were, they always had their own style) but as themselves, Iced Earth. Yes, I can hear Metallica and Maiden in their music but, more importantly, I hear Iced Earth.

I'm not going to say that The Dark Saga is a great album but it is my favorite Iced Earth release. I don't really care for the speed metal tunes on the album (speed metal has never really been my thing) but, fortunately, there are only a couple of those. I prefer the more epic tunes like the opening "Dark Saga" or the pounding "The Hunter". Even Iced Earth's ballad "I Died For You" is a fantastic piece of music. It should be noted that this "ballad" is still very heavy and, in fact, most probably won't consider "I Died For You" a ballad at all. The closing "A Question Of Heaven" is another one of the songs I really dig on The Dark Saga. They really know how to write good songs, does this band.

Believe me, if you like '80s Metallica and/or '80s Iron Maiden, you WILL love Iced Earth's The dark Saga. Trust me.
