I suppose this CD would be where I truly became an Iced Earth fan. The sound isn't as harsh as any of their other releases, which isn't bad, but rather a nice variation. As it's fairly obvious, this album focuses on Spawn, and Schaffer manages to convey the story in a masterful sense.Dark Saga - This song got me into Iced Earth. It's mid-tempo and acts soemwhat as an exposition to the entire story. I Died for You - A touching ballad, about how his soul was the price to see his love. Violate - The hardest track on here. It's pretty straightforward, about the Violater. The Hunter - My favorite song. It has the cool echoing intro, then the guitars go off, it's hard, and sweet at the same time, with the angelic vocals in the back of the second chorus. Pure awesomeness. Last Laugh - Fast paced about how the Devil has the last laugh in the deal, and how Spawn has become his tool for vengance. Depths of Hell - The only semi-alrite song on here, it has that kind of hell feeling, but if you've already heard Burnt Offerings (Dantes Inferno) than you know what hell sounds like. Vengance is Mine - The second hardest track on here. This ones another great one, with Barlows growling "Vengance is MINE!", you can really feel malciousness of his voice. The Suffering Trilogy Scarred - A darker song about, begininning on Spawns self-reflection of all that has transpired. Here he realizes that all along he's been a pawn for Lucifer. Slave to the Dark - Now he looks back on it all, and understands where he went wrong. He now knows he's damned, and can never be free. A Question of Heaven - Here we see him repent for what he's done. He looks up toward the heavens, and yells at the angels above who tell him he's chosen his path. He prays for death, and curses God for forsaking him, Curses Lucifer for decieving him, and realizes he is all alone, for eternity. Dark Saga is an awesome ride. It comes second to Something Wicked, but deserves merit in it's own right, because it's a very differnet style than Iced Earth others. That means it will feel and sound totally different than Iced Earths other albums, but retain that quality that lets you know this is true metal. Definetly a must own.
