I must say that Iced Earth are one of the bands that give America a good name. With mediocre bands dominating the mainstream, it's very refreshing to see a band that embraces their roots and still makes interesting metal without being cliched. I urge all "metalheads" to check Iced Earth out. This was the first IE disc I purchased, after a friend enthusiastically recommended them to me. I still thank him for that. IE has a unique sound, that while obviously indebted to such greats as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Cliff-era Metallica, and Slayer, still adds new ideas and makes music that is not in the least derivative. Jon's fantastic guitars (both acoustic and electric) give both a sinewy heaviness and a subtle beauty to the proceedings. Matt Barlow's ungodly vocals bring to mind past masters like Bruce Dickinson. The rythym section is also quite good, although not on the same level as the vocals and guitars. The songs have good variety of tempos, and the acoustic bits are really superb. However, the final three songs truly make this a worthwhile album. The "Something Wicked This Way Comes" trilogy, as they are called, will go down as an epic metal classic. You really need to hear them. All in all, this is a solid metal album that any open-minded metalhead with some taste would certainly enjoy. I urge you to pick this up and hear some top-notch metal. Up the Irons!!
