Words cannot express how much I love this album and how much I love Iced Earth. This is the album that introduced me to Iced Earth and since then, I've been hooked...I am now an Iced Earth freak. The album starts off with a thrashing beast entitled "Wolf",about the wolf man, which will have your head abnging and the brutal pace never stops until the end. Next up is the ambitious, complex epic, "Damien". This is a showcase for Jon Schaffer's songwriting skills and grand vision. "Jack" rips into you like the knife of the monster this song is about. A solid heavy, thrashy, metal burst of a song, with a small soft part in the middle. One of my favorites. "Ghosts Of Freedom", which is about all the lives lost in past wars, is a beautiful, emotional and heartfelt ballad, and is the only song that doesn't fit into the album's theme. "Im-Ho-Tep (Pharoh's Curse)", the song about The Mummy, is a solid, catchy rocker with a Middle-Eastern flavor to it, to stay true to the subject of the song. The next song, "Jeckyl And Hyde", is a fine rocker that's also catchy and almost creepy. "Dragon's Child", to me, has an almost Euro-Metal flavor to it, but it might just be me. Good song. "Frankenstein" is a slow, heavy stomper that's sort of un-characteristic of IE, but it's a great tune. One of the highlights of the album for me is "Dracula". It starts off as a soft ballad, then slowly turns into a fast-paced, heavy, emotional metal classic. Matt Barlow sounds fantastic in this song! The tenth and final song, "The Phantom Opera Ghost", is also a very complex and ambitous song, again showing off Jon Schaffer's talent as a songwriter. This song includes a great duet with Matt Barlow (as the Phantom Of The Opera) and almost unknown female vocalist Yunhui Percifield (singing the part of Christine). Yunhui has an absolutely beautiful voice, I love it. The first printings of the album comes with a second disc which includes Iced Earth doing a supurb cover of Iron Maiden's classic instrumental, "Translyvania" and a very informative and interesting interview with IE guitatist Jon Schaffer. This is one of my favorite Iced Earth albums, hands-down my favorite album of 2001, probably my favorite album of the "new" millenium so far, and it very well could be one of my all-time favorite albums ever. If you have any interest in IE at all, I advise that you pick this gem up, and for IE fans without this album......GET IT, ALREADY!!!!
