Days of Purgatory

(Average Rating: 8.64 out of 10)

Great! But not much variety.

First of all let me say, as others have before me, this is not a greatest hits album! Also, it is not Iced Earth's best. That distinction goes to Something Wicked This Way Comes (which is not only their best, but also their most diverse album). That said, this is a very good reworking of their earlier stuff. I like most of the versions from this album better than the original versions. Not much variety here, however. In fact, I think of this album as one very long song. That would usually be a complaint, but if you think of this as one song, it's a pretty awesome one! The tone is very dark, and very heavy all the way through. Do you like galloping 16th notes? I hope so, you'll hear them in just about every song. Double bass? Lots of that too (but skillfully done - unlike many other bands). Don't make this your first Iced Earth purchase, but if you like their other stuff, get it.
