This Iced Earth album doesn't sound anything like their other stuff. It's very heavy and very dark. The melodic parts are very dark and depressing. Although, on average, Iced Earth is a thrash/power metal band, this cd is not as thrashy and is more straight ahead heavy metal. And Barlow's voice is more brutal and grinding than on later efforts. Also, when he sings on this album, he uses a sad, depressing tone...not a high pitched falsetto scream like on later albums. The drumming contains lots and lots of double bass.

Later Iced Earth cd's seem to contain a song pattern structure but this album has no conventional structure to go by and the songs are longer and more complex. There is some brooding keyboard parts on this cd that add to the dark, moody, atmosphere of the music. The bass guitar is prominent and has a real low, heavy sound to it, giving the music a low end heavy feel.

The production of the cd is raw but you can still hear every thing clearly. The lyrics are more edgier and not as corny as their later stuff. They don't talk about killing babies or anything but the lyrics do have a evil edge to them.

People that do not like Iced Earth would probably like this ablum as it sounds nothing like their later stuff. This cd is an instant classic. It sounds like it should have came out in the 80's with the other albums by Metallica, Testament, and Slayer. Good Job, Iced Earth. Thanks for being one of my favorite bands.

PS: If your depressed or suicidal, I advise you not to listen to this album. It will just make things worse. This is not a happy, bright, cheerful album.
