Having been an Edguy fanatic for about four years now I can say that I was anxiously awaiting the release of Hellfire Club. I mean, from the beginning, I knew the album would have all of the "classic" Edguy traits such as big choruses, melodic solos and the usual Edguy-jokes but I also knew to expect some new elements as Edguy is one of those bands that always continues to grow while still maintaining their recognizable sound. With that being said, let me continue on with my review here and let you know how Hellfire Club lives up to the high Edguy standard.

Instead of going through track-by-track (which can get boring for the reader), I will summarize the key elements of Hellfire Club. First and foremost, Hellfire Club is a little more "raw" than Edguy's previous efforts (outside demo material, of course). What I mean by "raw" is the that guitar tone is a little more "gritty" sounding and heavy; not as melodic and clean as on Mandrake or even Theater Of Salvation. I think what Edguy was trying to capture here was a more live feeling which, in my opinion, they captured quite well. Even though the guitar is more "raw" sounding, you can expect quality production here that lives up to today's high production standards.

As for the songs, well, it's Edguy, so you can expect the big, catchy choruses displayed well with tracks like We Don't Need A Hero and Navigator. Since Theater Of Salvation Edguy have included an epic on their albums and The Piper Never Dies pays homage to this tradition on Hellfire Club. Even though The Piper Never Dies has more of a "rock" feel to it, I can honestly say that it lives up to Edguy's high standard of epic songs. Otherwise, you have two ballads here - Forever and The Spirit Will Remain. While Forever is a rather "typical" ballad (still good though), The Spirit Will Remain is simply one of the most beautiful ballads I've heard. Making use of a full orchestra, The Spirit Will Remain really unfolds into a beautiful song.

Basically, if you are an Edguy fan or a Power Metal fan in general, you definitely should invest in Hellfire Club ... you won't regret it!
