Although I'm a fan of "Follow the Reaper" and "Hatebreeder" I just recently picked this CD up because I had read some negative reviews on this page (more than I would have expected). But after hearing a few more good songs from the CD I bought it, and found it to be one of the best metal CD releases of 2003. While "Hate Crew Deathroll" ia catchy like previous COB CD's, a lot of people had problems with the fact that the keyboards are less prominent here, which they somehow attributed to some sort of selling-out. While keyboards are certainly less prominent, this approach allows the utterly masterful guitar wizardry of this band to come to the forefront. Alexi Laiho & Alexander Kuoppala are obviously among the best in the business, and to me "Hate Crew Deathroll" ranks up there with In Flames's "Colony" and Shadows Fall's "The Art of Balance" as one of the best metal guitar albums of the new generation of metal. For good examples of this check out the title track (best song on the CD), but all of the songs demonstrate my point well. "Hate Crew Deathroll" is for fans who want less fluff, black metal spookiness and more metal.
