I struggle to call this Metal at times.

Don't get me wrong. I love Blind Guardian. Probably my favorite band of all time. When I picked this up, I gave it a listen through, and then stuck it in my drawer where I put everything that doesn't really impress me immediately.

After a few months, I found it again. I put it back in the Cd Player, and I was shocked that I had originally discarded it. It sat in my Car Stereo for a few weeks. Yes, Overall, this is a good Metal album. WAY more Progressive than any of their previous works. And I think that's what Originally turned me off. Was that I was expecting the same Speedy Power Metal that I fell in love with.

But this sounds so different. The pace is much more Modern Rockish, but with heavy Double Bass. They still kick it into Top Gear here and there. But overall, this is the overall slowest BG release I've heard. But they did it well. They didn't fall into the Chasm Metallica did when they changed. There's still massively epic songs. There's some faster songs. There's the Acoustic song (on my import there is anyway). And gobs of guitar work. I like it more and more everytime I hear it.

But there's some flaws I would say. At times, there's just too many instruments playing at the same time. And there's just not enough sonic landscape for them all to fit into. Also, there's a new type of sound that's shown its face on NIGHTFALL IN MIDDLE EARTH. Its a sort of really staccato, palm-muted guitar sound. You can hear it in CURSE OF FEANOR. And I immediately recognized it when PRECIOUS JERUSELM started. Its all throughout NIGHT AT THE OPERA, opposed to where it was only hinted at on NIGHTFALL.

I like this album, but it doesn't have the same feeling as most other BG albums. My favorites are BATTLEFIELD, SOULFORGED, and AND THEN THERE WAS SILENCE. Not the masterpieces that NIGHTFALL and IMAGINATIONS were, but its better than FOLLOW THE BLIND and TALES FROM THE TWILIGHT WORLD.
